Home Modifications A Safe, Accessible Home for All Abilities and Ages
If you're like the majority of Americans over the age of 50, you want to continue living in a
familiar environment throughout your maturing years. According to the AARP, older
homeowners overwhelmingly prefer to "age in place," which means living in your home safely,
independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. Approximately 90% of people
50+ wish to remain in their own homes indefinitely.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and AARP developed the Certified Aging-
In-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation to address the growing number of consumers who would
benefit from aesthetically pleasing and functional home modifications. These improvements can
provide a much better value and are typically less expensive than moving to another home or an
assisted living facility.
Modifications may include: A master bedroom and/or bath on the first floor, bright lighting in all
areas, lever-style door handles, handrails and grab bars, walk-in shower in place of a bathtub,
stair lifts, ramps, first floor laundry, convenient kitchen cabinetry and appliances and widened
doorways to accommodate a walker or wheelchair.
These specialists are remodelers/builders, licensed, insured and trained to modify homes
specifically for aging in place. A list of CAPS certified builders can be found on the AARP or
the NAHB website by entering "CAPS" in the search box.
